Alleviate Sleep Apnea With UPPP
Sometimes, addressing a sleep disorder takes more than a dental appliance. Many patients struggling with chronic snoring and sleep apnea don’t find relief with non-invasive means of treatment. Fortunately, Indianapolis Sinus Center is here to help restore your quality of sleep. At our center, we offer a range of treatments, including uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. We meet with each Indianapolis patient to learn more about their condition and unique needs, and then we recommend a treatment best suited to them. Find out if uvulopalatopharyngoplasty could be the sleep apnea treatment you’re looking for.
What Is the Uvula and What Does It Do?
The uvula is the piece of soft tissue that hangs in the back of the throat. This unassuming piece of tissue plays a crucial role while you eat and drink, blocking foods and beverages from going up your nose instead of down your throat. However, some people need their uvula removed in a procedure called uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP).
Get the Sleep You Deserve with Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)
UPPP is a popular solution for reducing sleep apnea’s impact on your life. In order to increase your breathing airway and remove blockages, the Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) procedure removes throat tissue and part or all of your uvula, which may be the cause of your sleep apnea or snoring condition.
The procedure is:
- Quick (approximately 60 minutes)
- Completed as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia
- Able to remove obstructions in the throat
- An alternative to other similar reduction treatments
UPPP works to both enlarge and enhance your breathing airway to reduce any snoring experienced or trouble breathing while sleeping. This is why both tonsils and adenoids may also be removed in this process.
What to Expect From Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty Surgery
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is certainly a mouthful, but this procedure sounds more daunting than it is. Most patients don’t know what to expect when they first learn about this type of surgery. But at Indianapolis Sinus Center, we want all our patients to feel comfortable with their upcoming procedures. Here are a few things to know about UPPP before your surgery day:
- Tissue Removal—Depending on your needs, we may remove all of the uvula, part of the uvula, or tissue from the soft palate. Some procedures are completed with traditional surgical tools, while others use new laser methods.
- Recovery—Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty recovery typically takes between 10 and 14 days. During recovery, swallowing may become difficult, and you may have a sore throat. However, these symptoms should subside on their own. Our team will provide you with a list of home care instructions after surgery.
- Following Up—After UPPP, your physician may recommend a sleep study to measure how much your sleep apnea symptoms have improved
